The “Marls of Abaco” are a vast
expanse of prime, wilderness bonefish habitat, situated along the
western shore of Great Abaco
Island in the Bahamas. This little fished area stretches some 300 square miles: 30 miles to
the north and south, and about 10 miles off the west coast of
Abaco Island. The Marls have long been
known by well-traveled bonefishermen, along with South Andros
Island, as one of the most unique and productive fisheries throughout the 700
mile long Bahamian island chain.
The “Marls” are comprised of
hundreds of square miles of mangroves, creeks, cuts and flats,
navigable only by shallow draft flats and skiffs, and
knowledgeable guides. The unique character of the Marls, which
makes it such a perfect bonefish habitat, has spared it from
further development and to this day remains one of the best
bonefishing destinations in the Bahamas.
Activities for non anglers
include: diving or snorkeling, spectacular birding, beaches to
visit, some shopping and an amazing golf course, apart from the
lodge’s facilities that include a swimming pool located only
meters from the sea. There is quite a lot of birding to do
in Abaco as the island lies directly on the eastern flyway
migration route between North and South America. Abaco has more
bird species than any other Bahamian island. Green Turtle Cay and
Elbow Cay offer spectacular birding. See below for special
non angler offers.
Unlike some of the less developed
islands in the Bahamas, Abaco has the third largest airport in the
Bahamas (Marsh Harbour). Good numbers of direct
flights from the U.S. makes traveling easy and the lodge is an
easy 15-minute drive from the airport.
Hosting a maximum of eight
anglers, the Abaco Lodge is a small, yet world-class operation.
Fine cuisine, comfortable lodging, and a leisurely atmosphere go
hand and hand with the lodge’s dedication to putting anglers on
quality fish through their seasoned, expert guides. The management
and staff are fully committed to providing each client with the
utmost in service and attention to detail, as each client is sure
to enjoy the Bahamian fishing trip of a lifetime.
